| Description | The files in this series originally formed part of the Clerks's central file system. This system covered all of the Clerk's department and remained in use until the late 1980s. It was based on a unique, usually 4 or 5 digit, reference number for each file, but that number was simply a code for retrieval and included no elements of description or classification. The number allotted to a continuation file often bore no relationship to that of the initial file. The original code list of the filing system has not survived. |
