| Description | John Paul Rylands (1846-1923), a member of a well-known Warrington family, was a barrister by profession, and practised as a member of the Northern Circuit at the Chancery bar in Liverpool. His particular interests, however, were genealogy and heraldry; particularly in Lancashire and Cheshire; he became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1873, was a founder, in 1878, of the Record Society and Cheshire and subsequently its president., and a member of the councils of both the Harleian and Chetham Societies. He contributed to many genealogical and antiquarian journals and was best known for his editions of 'Visitations of Cheshire' 1518 and 1613 fir the Harleian Society. The records reflect the genealogical and heraldic interests both of himself and his immediate family.
