Description | By Robert Holland, Mill Bank, Frodsham, to ---- Evans, saying that the land purchased from "Clare" is a small garden on the Warrington side of the "Underbridge" at ACTON GRANGE and is now held by Edward Vernon. He says that the history of the land is as follows: According to old Maps it seemed to have been cut off from fields belonging to Sir Richard when the Canal was made. In 1811 it was let by Sir Richard to some one (name forgotten), after that it was neglected and ran to waste. Some time afterwards a man called Massey enclosed it, cultivated it, never paid any rent for it and eventually acquired a squatter's right or title. The Clares were his representatives from whom "we purchased what was really our own for about £30.". Paper. |
