Description | INQUISITION held at Halton, before William Danyell, deputy for William de Stanley then seneschal of Halton, to determine the title to certain lands in CLYFTON [Clifton] in dispute between Richard de Clyfton, who now holds them by hereditary right after the death of Joan his mother, and Alice de Lacheford, daughter of Richard de Lacheford, who claims to hold them to herself and her heirs in perpetuity, as next heir to John de Lacheford, her brother. The jurors find that Richard de Lacheford, father of the said Alice, first married Cecilia, daughter of Robert del Wode, and seised and enfeoffed the said Cecilia his wife in the said messuages and 11 acres of land in CLYFTON, to hold to herself and her heirs by the said Richard, by which Cecilia the said Richard had 2 daughters - Joan and Margaret - from which Joan, Richard de Clifton, who now holds the messuages and 11 acres of land, descends; and they further say that the said Cecilia died in the lifetime of Richard de Lacheford her husband, and afterwards the said Richard married Alice de Oldefeld and had issue John, E(mn)a, Alice and Agnes; and that the said Richard de Clyfton, who now holds the messuages and lands, is son and heir of the said Joan and holds by virtue of the gift and feoffment made to the said Cecilia, mother of the said Joan; and they say that John, E(mn)a, Alice and Agnes have no right by reason of the gift and feoffment first made by the said Richard de Lachford to the said Cecily his wife. It was decreed by the said seneschal that the said Richard de Clyfton shall have the said messuages and 11 acres of land to himself and his heirs for ever. Given, the Saturday next after the feast of St. Martin, 13 Henry IV. Seal and seal tag missing. Parchment. |
