TitleLetter (copy) from Earl of Cholmondeley to the Duke of Newcastle.
Date1745
DescriptionIn accordance with his orders he has taken steps to secure provisions for the coming of the King's troops-these would be available at reasonable rates if commissaries could be sent-these commissaries were necessary because of the difficulties experienced by the JPs in enforcing obedience on the farmers. The Earl expresses surprise that he should be forbidden to break down the bridges of Chester in view of previous instructions considering it necessary for the security of the town. He endorses the opinion that it is unnecessary to call out the militia of Cheshire as the rolls are lost and the arms non-existent. He gives information that the rebels have taken Carlisle and should, if moving forward, be at Chester before the King's troops
