Administrative History | The Duchy of Lancaster is a private estate owned by Her Majesty The Queen, as Duke of Lancaster. The rural estates consist of 18,433 hectares of land in England and Wales and comprise commercial, agricultural and residential properties, the majority of which are in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and Lincolnshire.
The holdings of the Duchy of Lancaster are administered in eight separate units, known as Surveys. There are five Rural Surveys (Cheshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire and Southern), covering approximately 18,540 hectares of land in England and Wales. The Cheshire Survey is comprised mainly of a large rural estate to the east of Crewe. This estate, which extends to 1,380 hectares, is centred on the historic properties of Crewe Hall and Crewe Hall Farm.
