| Administrative History | Crewe was incorporated as a Municipal Borough by a charter granted on 27 April 1877. It originally comprised the rural township of Monks Coppenhall which was administered by the vestry of the ecclesiastical parish of Coppenhall. The property owners and rate payers of Monks Coppenhall decided, in 1859, to adopt the Local Government Act of 1858 an to establish a Local Board of Health, to regulate the growth of the new town and in 1869, it was renamed the Crewe Local Board.
By the Local Government Board’s Provisional Orders Confirmation, 1892, most of Church Coppenhall and small portions of Shavington-cum-Gresty and Wistaston were added. In 1936 the boundaries were extended to include the whole of Church Coppenhall, further portions of Shavington-cum-Gresty and Wistaston, parts of Haslington, Warmingham, Leighton and Woolstanwood. In 1974 Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council was formed with the amalgamation of Nantwich Rural and Urban District Councils and Crewe Borough Council. See LDCRr list for post-1974 records. |
