DescriptionOf records in Exchequer Court of Chester viz. bill of complaint of Alexander Cotes against David Dymocke and John Fraunces, churchwardens, and their answers in a dispute about 'certayne ecclesiasticall dueties and other thinges'; decree 27 Sep 1596, with articles of agreement annexed, 10 Sep 1596, by which it was decreed that the chancel should belong to and be maintained by Alexander Cotes with no burials there except by his licence provided the fee damanded be not more than 10s., that the aisles adjoining should belong to and be maintained by Cotes, compositions not above 5s. being made with Cotes and the churchwardens for burials and laystalls, and the benefits divided equally between Cotes and the parish, that the body of the church, the aisles opposite, the steeple and bells should belong to and be repaired by the parish, that the two chapels recently repaired by Cotes should be his, allowing the lowest room of the north chapel to be a lodging for the vicar and assistant, that all other stone, timber, lead and iron be for the use of the parish in building the steeple and other necessary work, that the clerk, churchwardens, assessors, collectors, auditors should be chosen by the parishioners, that the vicar and assistant should be appointed by Cotes with the Bishop's assent, the Bishop to appoint if there is a month's delay, that the vicar and assistant should receive the stipend allowed by Her Majesty's Receiver, that payments to Cotes should be 12d. for every burial, 18d. for every marriage, 6d. for a churching where the child is alive, 3d. where dead, that 'privie Tithes' to Cotes should be 4d. yearly for an artificer and 12d. for those of the 'better sort', that the offices of parish clerk and sexton should be carried out by one man to be allowed 6d. for each marriage, 16d. for a burial with ringers, 6d. without ringers.
