The 'Market Inn' was built on the west side of Northgate Street between 1857 and 1864. It was bounded on the north and west by the 'Saracen's Head', which had been demolished by 1879, on the south by the market, opened in 1862, and on the east by Northgate Street. At the time of the conveyance to the Corporation in 1879, the 'Market Inn' was unoccupied.
The 'Market Inn', built by Peter Eaton, esq., replaced an earlier public house, known successively as the 'Star and Garter' c.1770. the 'Golden Hart', c.1820, and the 'Lord Hill, c.1850. This comprised a public house with a dwelling house at the rear, these buildings being demolished by Peter Eaton
