DescriptionChester City had hydro-electric works at the north end of the weir on the River Dee; T Nicholls and Co. tobacco manufacturers, operated mills, owned by by G F Nicholls, on the River Dee at the south end of the weir. The case was brought to restrain the defendants from taking water at their mill for any other purpose than was customary to drive the mill wheel. The papers include:- a) brief for the plaintiffs, with related documents including copy correspondence between the parties, precis and copies of deeds relating to the ownership and leasing of the mills and fishery from 11th cent, with commentary; extracts from City council and committee minutes 1864-1926; contract for erection of hydro-electric works 1912; photographs of the sites; b) plans including printed plans of Chester, 1796, 1805 by G Cole, 1809; c) copy deeds relating to the mills and rent charges issuing out of them c1650-1817 (4 bundles); d) bundle of copy deeds numbered 1-24, 1553-1913; e) precis of deeds held by Dee Fishery Board and correspondence 1915-1927; f) transcript of Harley MS 2084, folios 4-7; g) precis of the history of the Dee Mills by Frank Simpson; h) draft conveyance of water rights by G F Nicholls to Chester City 1923; i) bill of costs. Includes apparently unrelated plan and elevation of proposed stage in connection with Midland, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway bridge over River Dee of 1887.
