| Description | The mayor and sheriffs were required to publish and enforce proclamations issued by central government on a wide variety of matters including trade, coinage, foreign wars and the collection of taxes. A separate series of proclamations was created in the 1930s when those considered of special interest were bound into a volume, in some cases together with the writ which accompanied the proclamation. Duplicate copies of some of these proclamations are kept separate from the volume. Proclamations may also be found in profusion on the mayors' files (MF) from the early seventeenth century onwards. |
