Description | Note of events surrounding the elopement of Ellen, daughter of Ralph Aldersay, Alderman. The Assembly is stirred into action by a denunciation of the magistrates from the pulpit, but is handicapped by the fact that no actual law has been broken. Hugh Rogerson, Alderman, and Richard Wright, draper, Sheriff Peer, who together connived at the elopement, are summoned to appear. Rogerson submits to the judgement of the Assembly, by whom he is ordered to be detained in his own house and to pay a fine of 10/-, but Wright remains obdurate and is disfranchised. Ordered that any person conniving at the elopement of an Alderman's daughter in future, shall be disfranchised. |
