TitleOrders re Sheriff's Clerk and re keeping of taverns by women
Date1540
DescriptionOrder that from henceforth the Sheriff's Clerk shall occupy the office himself unless he is sick or otherwise allowed by the Sheriffs. He shall not allow anyone to be in the Exchequer under him except when he himself is present, unless it be an honest person.
May 12th. 1540. (Henry Gee, Mayor.). Since all the taverns in this City are kept by young women, which causes a dishonest report of the City to run abroad, it is ordered that, after the 10th. of June next no taverns or alehouses shall be kept within the City by any woman between the ages of fourteen and forty, (fine, 40/-).
