Description | Report of action taken in Chester to mitigate the effects of the levying of the new imposition of tonnage and poundage. William Glasier, the Vice-Chamberlain, commissioner for the collection of the taxes, is collecting the new taxes in addition to the old, with the result that Chester is worse rather than better off than other ports. (ZA/B/1/96). At an Assembly on April 30th., resolved that two merchants, William Aldersaye, Alderman, and William Jewet, be sent to present petitions at Court for mitigation of the imposition. They return with a letter of June 13th., 1560, from the Lord Treasurer to the Vice-Chamberlain, wherein he is instructed to stop collecting the old customs. The letter is presented to Glasier at an Assembly on Aug. 14th. However, he protests it is merely a private letter, and not a sufficient warrant to justify any action on his part. "......... and so contynued still leveynge and exactynge the said unlawfull coustomes ....... untyll further remedie therfore was providyd as herafter shall appere." |
