TitleAppointment of scavengers; payments of monies; admissions; appointments
Date28 Oct 1670
DescriptionIt was ordered that all who had been Treasurers and had not yet accounted should perfect their accounts within a month. Seven auditors were appointed to receive the accounts.
The Mayor's proposal for the appointment of three scavengers to cleanse the City weekly during the following year and to be paid by means of an assessment on the City was unanimously approved. William Brereton was appointed scavenger for Northgate street, without the Northgate, Watergate street and all lanes belonging to them at £16 a year, John Woodworth for Bridge street, Handbridge and all the lanes adjoining at £20 a year, and Peter Hall for Eastgate and Foregate street and the lanes adjoining at £16 a year. The Mayor and the Justices of the Peace were empowered to impose such proportion of the said sums upon the respective wards as they should judge fit, and the Justices were to appoint assessors and collectors.
A certificate from the auditors appointed for taking the accounts of Richard Minshull, Alderman, late Treasurer, and since deceased, showed that the City owed him £56: 8s: 11½d. It was ordered that the Treasurers should pay this sum to Mrs Ann Minshull, widow, executrix of the will of Alderman Minshull.
Portions of £25 of the monies of Sir Thomas White were granted to Randle Foulkes, clothworker, (ZA/B/2/170) Nicholas Knowles, shoemaker, and John Taylor, draper. Thomas Dannold, ironmonger, and Benjamin Willcocke, beerbrewer, petitioned for similar grants.
Sir John Arderne, bart., and Alexander Rigby, esq., were admitted to the freedom gratis.
Michael Johnson, soap-boiler, and Thomas Wade, gentleman, were admitted to the freedom, paying respectively £40 and £10.
It was thought fit that Thomas Trollocke, weaver, should have the next £25 of Sir Thomas White's money which should be disposed of, and that Hugh Moulson, tanner, should have the following £25.
