TitleAssessment for cleansing of streets; repairing of Eastgate, repairs; petitions; lease

DescriptionIt was ordered that the arrears of the assessment charged upon the City by virtue of an order of the Sessions of the Peace, towards the cleansing of the streets, repairing of the Eastgate, the provision of buckets and ladders and the repair of the highways, should be collected. It was further ordered that all householders within the City and all dwellers in cellars were to be responsible for sweeping the streets before their doors. As in the past the dirt must be carried away at their own charges.
All persons who had been Treasurers and had not yet accounted were to perfect their accounts before December 5th. Six Aldermen were appointed auditors to receive the accounts.
The commonalty of the City petitioned that the enclosure about that part of the common of Hool Heath which belonged to the City might be taken down, and that they might have the same liberty of commoning there which they had formerly enjoyed. It was ordered that the enclosure should continue but that freemen and freemen's widows should have liberty to pasture their cattle there from May 1st to March 10th every year, for certain annual payments (page damaged, amounts missing).
(ZA/B/2/172v) John Ratcliffe, esq., asked for a fee farm of the waste ground between his dwelling-house and the channel on the street side. It was ordered that he should have a lease for thirty-one years at a yearly rent of 12d.
George Mainwaring, merchant, was granted a lease for twenty-one years of the New Tower, for the yearly rent of 40s.
Roger Morris's petition to be allowed to dwell in the cellar under the Pentice on the Roodee during his life was read but not granted.
