TitleCity watch
Date11 Nov 1642
DescriptionThe Mayor's propositions for keeping a constant watch on the City were approved and ordered to be put into execution; viz.:-
At each of six gates there should be eight persons, four with muskets and four with halberds. At the Newgate there should be four persons, two of them musketeers and two halberdiers.
A Court of Guard of twelve persons should be kept at the High Cross to be ready both day and night to give directions for the better order of the watch.
(ZA/B/2/f.59v). Eight persons from the trained band were to be employed, four in the day and four at night, in exercising the watchmen and instructing them in the use of their arms.
The musketeers who watched at the gates and at the Cross should receive their muskets from the Pentice, and should pass them on to those who succeeded them in the watch.
The charge for maintaining this watch would be at least £66 13s 4d a month, which must be borne by the whole of the inhabitants; and for this purpose a levy should be made.
Appointment of six persons as "Scessors" for assessing £66 13s 4d. The ordering of the watch was referred to the Mayor and Mr. Francis Gamull.
Order for a general muster on Monday next of all the soldiers of the City both of the trained band and of the volunteers.
