Description | Thomas Parnell and William Sproston elected Councilmen in the stead of William Whittell and William Bennett, Sheriffs. Nicholas Ince, Christopher Blease, Randle Holme senior, and William Parnell, Aldermen, Richard Broster and Edward Hulton appointed auditors for the year. Peter Hatton, gentleman, sought admission to the freedom, but the major part of the Assembly voted against this. (ZA/B/2/64). Petition from Sir Richard Grosvenor for a grant in fee-farm of the row or ground lying waste before his house on the west side of Bridge Street, lying between Cubbins Lane and "the Signe of the Angell". His present employment in the King's service in this garrison occasioned him to dwell in his house, which was far too little to receive his family. Therefore he wished to inclose or build upon the waste ground, and to erect a pair of stairs into his house out of Bridge Street. It was agreed to grant his petition, and that he should pay a fine of 26s: 8d. and the yearly rent of 2s: 6d. The petition of the brethren and sisters of the Hospital of St. Giles alias Spitle Boughton was left to be considered at another Assembly. It was ordered that a petition should be presented to His Majesty "for reliefe towards the maintenance of this Garrison". The proposals for raising three Troops of Horse for the defence of the City were approved and it was ordered that two men should go through the City, to strangers and to Citizens, to know what they would freely contribute towards these troops. |
