DescriptionRichard Wright, haberdasher, was chosen Councilman in the stead of John Leckonby, deceased, and William Wilson, tanner, instead of William Gregory, deceased.
(ZA/B/2/65v). John Adlington, gentleman, sought admission to the freedom, which was granted to him for a fine of £10 and the usual fees for buckets and other duties. William Grice and Lutterell Gifford also sought admission, and this was granted to them on the same terms.
Thomas Everton's petition for admission was granted and his fine fixed at £3: 6s: 8d. The petitions for admission from Thomas Grey and Hugh Dod were rejected by the major part of the Assembly.
(ZA/B/2/66). Petition of Mr. William Ainsworth that he might be elected preacher of the Sunday afternoon lecture in St. Peter's church. For several months he had delivered this lecture in Mr. Porter's stead, having been appointed by the Mayor and Aldermen, but could receive no recompense without the suffrage of the Assembly. It was ordered that he should be lecturer for the Sunday lecture, and that Mr. Sudden should fill the vacant post of Fridays' lecturer.
John Aldersey, ironmonger, petitioned for a lease for three lives of a shop in Northgate Street under the Pentice, sometime in the possession of Ralph Jenings, draper, deceased; he offered the old rent and a reasonable fine. The lease was granted for a fine of £5 and the yearly rent of 18s.
John Skellerne, ironmonger, and Margery his wife petitioned for a lease for three lives of a shop in Eastgate Street under the Pentice, sometime in the possession of Elizabeth Johnson, widow, deceased (mother of Margery). The lease was granted for a fine of £5 and the yearly rent of 20s.
(ZA/B/2/66v). It was agreed that the Mayor should appoint two Aldermen (J. Ps. in the City), to repair to Lord Byron to acquaint him with the noisomeness of the "the pudell" near the Eastgate, and to move that it might be stopped up.
Order that all inhabitants should cleanse the streets before their doors within one month. Fine for negligence: 10s.
