TitleAppointments; maintenance of garrison; mud walls; petition
Date3 Sep 1644
DescriptionAppointment of William Sparke and William Ince, Aldermen, as auditors to take the Muringers' accounts, the accounts of Alderman, Holme the elder concerning his disbursements on the City's behalf in entertaining Prince Rupert, and his accounts of his disbursements for repairing the mud walls.
It was ordered that, for the maintenance of the garrison, £100 a week should be assessed and collected, namely £60 from the Citizens and ancient inhabitants and £40 from those who had come into the City for protection. The Governor of the City was to appoint persons to assess and collect the £40. Assessors were appointed for the £60 and were instructed how to proceed. The assessment should continue for six weeks only. The Mayor and Aldermen were to appoint collectors, who were to make their first weekly payment on Sept. 13th to Alderman Walley, who was appointed Treasurer.
(ZA/B/2/68v). The Treasurers were ordered to oversee the mud walls according to the Governor's desire. They were to wait upon the Governor for his warrant to the Sheriff of Flintshire to press carts for the carriage of coals for the Chester garrison. It was agreed that Hugh Moulson and Thomas Watt should see the coals loaded and carried to the City.
The Mayor moved that Edmund Hall should be admitted, but the Assembly voted against this.
John Adlington and other inhabitants near the Eastgate petitioned that, since the erection of the draw-bridge at this gate, their cellars were flooded when it rained because the draw-bridge ditch was choked up with filth. It was ordered that the ditch should be cleaned and a "perculles" made for the Eastgate. Robert Harvie, Alderman, was requested to oversee these works, and to follow the Governor's directions.
