TitleElections; petition; appointments, order for merchandise to be taken to the Common Hall
Date18 Oct 1644
DescriptionRichard Teyler, draper, and William Sutton elected Councilmen in the places of the sheriffs, Humphrey Phillippes and Ralph Davies.
(ZA/B/2/69). The almsmen of Mr. John Vernon petitioned that the alms bequeathed to them were in arrears owing to the slackness of the tenants in paying their rents to the City. It was ordered that tenants who had not paid their rents should appear before the Mahor and Aldermen to pay, and if they refused the Mayor and Aldermen should take further action.
Appointment of seven auditors to take the City's accounts.
(ZA/B/2/69-69v). George Bennett, merchant, Keeper of the Common Hall, reported that of late all or most of the merchandize brought to the City had been taken to private houses and there secretly sold, instead of first being taken to the Common Hall to be pitched. This course was prejudicial not only to Bennett but also to the City's customs; therefore former orders were to be put into execution and the Leavelookers were ordered to assist Bennett in enforcing them.
