TitlePayments for defence of the City and City's debts
Date31 Jan 1645
DescriptionIt was ordered that so much of the ancient plate of the City as should amount to £100 should be converted into coin for the use and defence of the City and towards the payment of the City's debts.
It was ordered that the sum of £160 should be assessed and levied from the City (ZA/B/2/70) by £20 a week, and used for the defence works and for providing match, coals, candles and other necessaries. Of this sum, £15 a week was to be collected from the Citizens and ancient inhabitants and £5 from those who had fled into the City for protection. Six assessors were appointed and the constables of each ward were ordered to collect the assessment and were empowered to distrain in the event of non-payment.
Some inhabitants had hitherto refused to pay the assessment made by the Assembly orders of July 19th and September 3rd last. It was therefore ordered that these arrears should be collected and that the goods of persons refusing to pay should be distrained.
(ZA/B/2/70v). It was ordered that sheriff peers and all others accountable to the City should bring in their accounts and monies to the auditors on the following Thursday. The Auditors were to require the executors of Mr. William Gamull (late Alderman and J.P. of the City), to bring the legacy which he bequeathed.
It was agreed that all former assessments should be carefully examined and the arrears collected, in particular that for the payment of the £300 which was presented by the City to the King and the Prince of Wales.
