TitleRaising of funds for Prince Rupert's Foot Regiment; orders
Date18 Feb 1645
DescriptionThe Mayor motioned that some course should be devised for the speedy raising of monies for Prince Rupert's foot Regiment then resident in the garrison. Information was given by His Majesty's Commissioners for sequestering delinquents' estates for the maintenance of Chester garrison, that several sums of money were due to the garrison from this source. It was therefore agreed that £40 out of the delinquents' estates should be transferred to Sergeant-Major Michell for the use of the Regiment; (ZA/B/2/71) viz. £12 from Mr. Edward Russell, £10 from John Grey, £10 from Dr. Mainwaring, £4 from Mr. William Allen and £4 from Sir Hugh Calveley. Alderman Parnell and Alderman Broster, Treasurers for the City, were to repair to the gentlemen to acquaint them with this order.
Order that Thomas Weston, the executors of Philip Sproston, William Drinkewater and William Crompton should be fined £5 each for being Sheriffs before being Leavelookers. Failure to pay would incur a further fine of £10 each, to be levied by the City soldiers.
Order that Edward Hulton, William Whittell, William Bennett and all who were accountable to the City should deliver their accounts to the auditors on the following Thursday. Fine for refusal: £20 each, to be levied by the City soldiers.
