Description | Reports of Assembly Committees are found in the Assembly books from the sixteenth century onwards and minutes of some Assembly committees are found on the Assembly files from c.1700. This volume contains the minutes of both standing and ad hoc committees of the Assembly from 1805-1835.
In addition, this volume also contains from 1813 minutes of meetings headed variously `Court of Aldermen', `Meeting of Magistrates' and `Meeting of Mayor and Aldermen'. There are numerous references in the Assembly books from the sixteenth century onwards to items of business ordered to be investigated or dealt with by the Mayor and Justices, i.e. ex-mayors, or by the Mayor and Aldermen i.e. senior members of the Assembly. From 1696 files survive of proceedings in the Inner Pentice before the mayor, recorder and named aldermen relating both to their summary powers as Justices re the administration of the poor law e.g. settlement and bastardy orders, and to routine administration carried out by them on behalf of the Assembly, such as the admission of freemen etc. see MAYORS FILES (ZMF) and MAYOR: INNER PENTICE FILES (MIP). However, from c.1700 when the group of senior members of the Assembly was used by it as a committee some minutes of these meetings are found on the Assembly files, and the Inner Pentice Files sometimes contain references to the dates when these meetings were to be held. The minutes of the `Court of Aldermen' etc. in this volume relate to business to be considered by the Assembly, sometimes initiated by the Assembly, sometimes by an Assembly committee and sometimes by the Mayor.
