Description | Petition of the Constables and other inhabitants of John's ward, who have suffered by divers persons building houses and workshops on the waste land of the City near Cowlane gate and have dug deep holes and pits to get clay to make bricks. Edward Gray, bricklayer, had dug up about 60 yards of ground. John Locker, skinner, had built a workshop there and was presented at the last Quarter Sessions for poisoning the water belonging to the Common there. William Garrett had taken in and added to the croft called Justinge Croft, 71 yards in breadth and 203 yards in length which 'stoppeth upp' Horne Lane road and bars the inhabitants from the said commons to the lane. Richard Kirkman who has two closes there, has taken in land belonging to Horne Lane - which was a customary road for carrying coals, corn, hay, etc. They ask for these abuses to be remedied. Various signatures. |
