DescriptionReport signed by William Ince, Edw: Bradshaw, William Crompton, and John Johnson on their hearing, as ordered by Assembly, of the Leavelookers for the current and past year concerning a ship's lading of tobacco. The old Leavelookers have received part of the City custom for this and claim the whole and offer the following precedents:- 1. When Mr. Thomas Robinson was Leavelooker there came a parcel of from London by land and was cellared in the City but before the City custom was paid or compounded for, Mr. Robinson left his office and the new Leavelookers claimed the custom as due to them. The Mayor and Aldermen in the Penthouse determined the difference and ordered that the ex-Leavelookers should receive the custom. 2. While Mr. John Knowles was Leavelooker a parcel of Spanish iron came by sea and was landed but the City's custom was neither paid nor compounded for until the time of the succeeding Leavelookers of whom Mr. William Heawood claimed the custom, but the Mayor ordered that it be paid to the ex-Leavelookers since the goods were landed during their time. Mr. Heawood further says that the ship came into the river, part of the goods were sold and the master of the ship tendered his inventory at the Custom House in their time. Mr. Henry Younger, now Leavelooker, desires to be expressed in justifying their right to the customs they have received until his brother Leavelooker comes home.
