Description | In restoring the sculpture of this part of the Cathedral, a very ancient fashion was revived. In sculptures of the Middle ages, celebrated persons were frequently held up to ridicule or admiration. Here we find a corbel representing Mr. Gladstone, pen in mouth, in the apparently congenial act of uprooting a venerable church. Mr Disraeli, in an other corbel, is armed with a sword and is defending the Crown against the attacks of Dr. Kenealy. |
