TitleEngraving: The Bishop's Throne.
Daten.d.
DescriptionThe Throne was on the south side of the Choir (as now). It formerly stood in the Chapel of the Virgin (now the Lady Chapel) and is a fine specimen of Early Gothic Architecture. It was the Pedestal on which rested the Shrineof the Virgin, Patroness of the Abbey, St Werburgha. Soon after the Reformation it was removed to its position in the Choir and converted into the Throne of the Bishop. Its Architecture is that of the earliest part of the fourteenth century.
