Description | The Mystery Plays were performed in Whitson week, the first nine on Monday, the nine following on Tuesday and the remainder of the plays on Wednesday. They began at the Abbey Gates, proceeding to the High Cross, then to Watergate Street, Bridge Street, and the other pricipal streets. The concourse of spectators must have been considerable. The charges and costs were met by a levy upon the members of the several companies. 'The Slaughter of the Innocents' took place on the second day, Tuesday, and was performrd by the Goldsmiths and Masons companies. These plays continued to be acted at irregular intervals as late as 1607. |
