Administrative History | John Parsons Earwaker (1847-95) had a particular interest in the history of Cheshire and Lancashire and acquired a large collection of printed books and manuscripts relating to both counties. In 1878, he helped to found the Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire; was Honorary Editorial Secretary of the Chester Archaeological Society, 1887-92; and also served on the councils of the Chetham Society, the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire and the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society. Earwaker's published works include East Cheshire: Past and Present, 1877 and 1880; History of the Ancient Parish of Sandbach, 1890; and History of the Church and Parish of St. Mary on the Hill, Chester, 1898. He also contributed articles to various journals. The Cheshire material acquired by Earwaker was purchased after his death by the first Duke of Westminster, who presented it to the Chester Archaeological Society in 1898. |
