Administrative History | The pay book of the Temeraire (TNA: ADM 33/689) for Sep 1760-Aug 1763 does not include a George Wade. The RN captains of the ship were Matthew Barton (9 Oct 1760 to 8 Sep 1762) and Richard Bickerton (from 9 Sep 1762) The only captiain George Wade found in an internet search was appointed a captain in the Royal Marines 57th Company 14 Mar 1761 (London Gazette). However the pay book lists only Walter Stewart (31 Dec 1770 to 24 Aug 1762) and Leslie Brown (1 Apr 1762 to 3 Jul 1763) as captiains of Marines The two captain's logbooks for the Temeraire (TNA: ADM 51/4366) were both signed by Matthew Barton and are part of official Admiralty records so there is no doubt about their provenance. This may therefore mean that George Wade's had acquired an unofficial log of the Temeraire even though he was not on the ship himself. The logbook may also be for another ship in the same convoy. The description of the logbook cannot therefore be fully authenticated |
