Administrative History | In 1840 the incumbent of Christ Church parish (Newtown) received a grant from the National Society towards the building costs of two schoolrooms to provide a day school for the parish where previously there had been only a Sunday school. [see Fowler op. cit. p.89 seq]. The school was built in 1842 in Church Street and took boys, girls and infants. In 1844 the boys were separated into their own department in the same building. Later, in 1855, they were transferred to a new school in Bishopsfield, Hoole, becoming virtually a separate school with their own records. These records were continued with a change of name when Christ Church Boys were accommodated in the first new Council built school in George Street. [For further information see George Street School introduction DES/2]. When the boys moved out of the Church Street school building, the elder girls were able to be separated from the infants. In 1871 a separate infant school was established. A headmistress for the Infant Department was appointed in 1871 and separate log books started. In 1872 the Girls' Department was enlarged. The Infant School log books finish in 1953 when, upon the retirement of the headmistress, they were again amalgamated with the Girls under one headmistress. Christ Church School finally closed in Dec 1960. |
