Administrative History | Following the Municipal Corporations Act, 1835, the powers and functions of Chester Corporation expanded, especially as parliament passed various legislation and departments were established to carry out the responsibilities placed upon the Council. Often the development of a department was preceded by the appointment of a related Council committee, which recommended the employment of officers to carry out necessary duties. An example of this is the establishment of the Electricity Department. The work of other officers, notably the town clerk and the treasurers, was well established before 1835, but their departments developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as their work increased. In 1974, following the Local Government Act, 1972, some of the functions of Chester Corporation were transferred to Cheshire County Council. This resulted in a reorganisation of departments to carry out the work of the new authority. |
