DescriptionThese records mainly cover the period 1880 onwards, after the formation of Greenall, Whitley and Co Ltd. The title deeds go back to the early 18th century and include properties and land originally owned by subsidiaries. This period saw the Chester Northgate brewery become a subsidiary in 1949, and the take-over and renaming of David Williams and Co as Greenall Whitley ( North Wales) Ltd in 1964 (see sections DGB/6-7).

Administrative HistoryGreenall Whitley and Company was formed in October 1880, the principal shareholders being Sir Gilbert Greenall and Peter Whitley, each with 300 shares. It became a public limited company on 29 July 1952, and in 1958 the Wilderspool and St Helens breweries were brought together. A Show Department was formed in 1952, based at St Helens, to cater for and arrange outside events.
