DescriptionThe Russians retreating before the Anglo-French advance - no combat yet. English Army 20,000 strong, French 40,000. Light Division 2 days in advance of main army. Goods packed on horses and mules, one to each officer. He was in charge of the Regimental baggage train leaving Varma, which "you would have laughed to see" 150 horses and 20 bullock waggons with stores. Not properly packed or loaded and many came off, causing pack animals to bolt. Took from 3 am to 3 pm to travel 10 miles, train extending over 3 miles, Cossacks could have captured the whole baggage for 7 regiments as it was not adequately guarded. "Saddle bags and tents were strewed all along the road" Bulgaria beautiful but laid waste. No vegetables available, occasionally milk and eggs to be had, but for 2 days they lived on biscuits, salt pork and water. One ship, the Tiger, lost in the Black Sea, all hands taken prisoner and some killed. Describes his appearances now as that of a "hairy moustachioed ruffian".
