TitleShakerley Family: Estate Management
Date1780-1879
DescriptionA considerable amount of the papers and correspondence between 1781 and 1790 originate with Samuel Wright, agent and receiver for Peter Shakerley's estates in the counties of Chester, Lancaster, Denbigh and Flintshire from 1779. Wright was responsible for the administration of the estates during the minority of Charles Watkin John Buckworth, who assumes the name Shakerley on his 21st birthday on 15 June 1788, when he inherits Peter Shakerley's estates, although the Act of Parliament confirming this is not passed until 1790. During this period the estates are administered as a whole, wherther they are the estates held by Ann Shakerley, Margaret Shakerley, Lady Frances Williams Wynn (nee Shakerley) or Elizabeth Buckworth (nee Shakerley), having passed to them through Peter Shakerley's will. Ann and Frances both hold land in Denbighshire and Flintshire; Margaret in Lancashire and Cheshire, and Elizabeth in Cheshire and Denbighshire. Furthermore, George Shakerley had left a sixth each of the estate at Gresford to his six children (including Frances). Around the time of Mr Shakerley's majority, Samuel Wright's sons become more involved in the administration of the Shakerley estates, as does Mr Shakerley himself.
Charles Buckworth, husband of Elizabeth Buckworth (nee Shakerley) died in 1783; some of the correspondence and accounts after this period relates to Mrs Buckworth's activities as his executrix.
For much of this series, Mrs Buckworth writes from her home in Park Place, Berkshire, near Windsor Great Park. Margaret Shakerley (Peter Shakerley's widow) lived at Twickenham, and Ann Shackerley lived near Staines, Middlesex.
