TitleVenables of Agden estate records
DescriptionThis estate centred on property held in Agden, Millington, Mere, Statham, High Leigh, Horton, Hartford, Knutsford and Lymm (Cheshire) and Whiston, Prescot, Halsnead and Witton (Lancashire). The records consist of deeds 1403-1863; estate papers, accounts, plans and correspondence 1708-1809, relating to Agden; deeds to property in Bollington, Lymm and Mere 1502-1815 and Chester 1390; and in Lancashire 1612-1761.
Administrative HistoryThe moiety of Agden came to the Venables as the result of a settlement of her lands of Ellen, widow of Thomas Warburton of Agden on William Venables and Ellen, his wife in 1401 (see DVA 1/1). The estate remained in the Venables family (augmented by later marriages - see introduction to title deeds section) until it terminated in the direct line in George Venables of Agden, whose sole daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, married Philip Touchet Chetwode of Oakley bart, in 1732.
Related MaterialSome Chetwode material appears in this collection, but the main series of Chetwode records, including deeds and estate maps, and related Agden papers, carries the reference ref ZCR 70. It is not known how or when these two collections became separate.
