TitleMayors' Company Papers
Date1514-1627
DescriptionThe mayor arbitrated in disputes between the city companies or guilds and was called upon to defend their privileges and give judgement in their disputes with people infringing these privileges. He also exercised control in company matters which affected the city as a whole, for example the sale of bread. Company papers were originally filed in two bundles. One related to the Bakers' Company; the other to the Joiners, Carvers and Turners and the Wrights, Slaters and Sawyers. Documents in this series consist mainly of petitions to the mayor; proclamations issued by the mayor; and pleadings.
