Administrative History | In 1889 Birkenhead Rural Deanery was one of 8 rural deaneries in the Archdeaconry of Chester and included churches in Birkenhead, Bidston, Claughton, Liscard, New Brighton, Oxton, Rock Ferry, Seacombe, Tranmere and Wallasey. Deanery chapter meetings appear to have been first held in 1889, when the rules and regulations (EDA 8/14/5657/1) required one, later two annual meetings. By 1918 the Standing Orders (EDA 8/14/5657/3) specified that nine Ordinary Meetings, to include the four Embertide Gatherings and a Quiet Day were to be held annually. All the clergy of the Deanery might attend. Ruri-decanal Conferences were held twice annually and included both clergy and lay members of constituent parishes. |
