Description | Declarations of penance contain the names of the offenders, details of the crime committed, the order of procedure, and the chapel or church where the penance is then to be performed. Most of the documents include certificates by the minister and wardens that the penance has been performed and the date of its performance. Some documents (all of them for the early years) have separate notes to this effect signed by the minister and/or wardens. Some bundles contain visitation notices, commutations, and lists of citations. Most contain certificates of poverty, testimonials of good character and letters relating to penances. For the years 1757-65 these are bundled separately from the actual declarations. For the later years the documents are more chronological. |
