TitleSessions Files
DescriptionSessions files contain original documents used by the Clerk at each sessions. Included are Recognizances and releases; Orders; Indicments; Presentments; Writs and Warrants; Jury Lists; Petitions; Depositions, Examinations and Informations; Travers B and Accounts.
One 19th cent file only was originally looked at in detail viz: QJF 316/1 (Jan 1888) during a comparison of quarter sessions records 1588, 1688, 1788 and 1888.
During 1993 a group of volunteer indexers/researchers looked in detail at some sample years throughout the nineteenth century to see what these files contained. First of all the rest of 1888 was checked (QJF 316/2-4) then the files for two years either side of 1888: 1886, 1887 (QJF 314, 315) and 1889, 1890 (QJF 317, 318). Some more sample years were then chosen: 1801 (QJF 229), 1808 (QJX 236), 1818 (QJF 246), 1838 (QJF 266), and 1858 (QJF 286); and details of miscellaneous items found appear with the relevant files.
The sessions files supplement the sessions books in that they contain documents of a miscellaneous character including writs of summons, jury panels, list of constables, petitions examinations and letters to or from the bench.
For the years 1951, 1961 and 1971, all surviving case papers such as depositions, anteecedent histories of prisoners etc have been kept as a sample
