TitleFinney of Fulshaw
Date1681 - 1851
DescriptionMainly personal and business papers and correspondence of successive members of the family, including some relating to sugar and cotton plantations in Barbados 1681-1705, and to Pennsylvania 1694-1764, where some members settled; militia papers 1715; estate papers 1594-1908; manuscript history of Wilmslow 1785
Administrative HistorySamuel Finney III compiled two or possibly three histories of his family and parish. DFF/36/38 is an incomplete`Historical Survey of the Parish of Wilmslow' compiled in 1785, using the same source as that copied completely (though without the tabular survey) for J.P. Earwaker a century later and is in the Chester Archaeological Society's Library in 2 quarto volumes. The serialised extracts from the `Survey of the Parish of Wilmslow' printed in T. Worthington Barlow's Cheshire and Lancashire Collector v.1 (Manchester, 1853) and taken from a ms. belonging to B. Lupton of Cheadle, surgeon, do not appear in the above mss. and must come from another compilation or supplement. The latter publication also includes extracts from `Memoires of the family of Finney of Fulshaw (near Wilmslow) Cheshire', compiled in 1787, also from a ms. in Lupton's possession. This includes the early history of the family before it is mentioned in the `Historical Survey' and gives the later history in similar but slightly revised form. Finney also compiled two volumes of evidences: `Collection from Charters and other Muniments, Statutes, Law Books, Historys and Manuscripts relating to Fulshaw, serving not only to explain the Tenure, but the Liberties Rights and Franchises belonging to that Estate' in 1768; and `Copies and Extracts of Charters, Deeds &c. in the possession of Samuel Finney serving to authenticate his historical survey of the Parish of Wilmslo and Memoirs of the Family of Finney of Fulshaw'. Copies of these were also made for Earwaker and are in the Archaeological Society's Library.
