Description | Petition of John Barker, clothier, stating that in 1657 he was admitted as Master of the House of Correction. Although he urged then to issue warrants to the Constables of the City wards to bring in vagrant sturdy beggars and other idle persons, but as nothing was done, he was forced to hire work folk. The house is not fully finished, his salary is over six years in arrears, and he is damaged by the non-performance of the articles of agreement. He asks that the articles be made good or else that he be compensated. If he is continued, he asks that warrants may be issued to supply persons to be set to work there and that the house may be furnished and, finally, that he may be admitted to the freedom. Note: 'To continue till the last day of February next And then to depart.' |
