Description | PETITION by the Lord of the vill of Cholmundelegh [Cholmondeley] that a place of burial, baptism and other necessary things, might be appointed in the chapel of CHOLMUNDELEGH [Cholmondeley], and that the tithes, oblations and other appurtenances of the vill might be granted for the sustenance of a chaplain serving the said chapel, as it is four miles from its parich church of MALPAS. On account of the distance, many harms result, viz: Infants die without baptism, old men cannot reach the church for weakness. Men and women die without confession and extreme unction. The Dead in time of war are buried in the fields because Malpas Church is so near Wales that part of the parish belongs to the Welsh and part to the English, wherefore the English not go to the Church in war-time. At one time it happened that Englishman dared not to go to Malpas parish Church on Easter Day to receive Corpus Christi for fear of the Welsh, but received the said Body at Cholmundelegh [Cholmondeley] Chapel.
