John Chesshire, Thomas Tatlok, John Wrenoo, James Ley, William Mores, Hugh Bulkeley, John Stringfelowe, Richard Legh, wright, John Gest, Oliver Bolton, Thomas Crik and Hugh Lowe are engaged in the art of carpentry and are not of the franchise. VIII [1510] at Chester took divers cattle of the farmers (vicini) and inhabitants of Hondbrige and impounded them within the said lordship and detained them by force until they had extortionately and unjustly levied from each of the said farmers a payment of 4d. Inquest at the second Session of the Peace held before William Rogersone, Mayor, and Ralph Birkhened, Recorder, and Richard Wirhall, Thomas Barrowe, Richard Godeman, Thomas Smyth and Thomas Hawardyne, Aldermen and Justices of the Peace on Thursday in the fifth week of Lent, 2 Hen. VIII [3rd April, 1511], on the oaths of Richard Hokenhull, baker, Randle Smyth, Hamon Johnson, Tudor ap Thomas, Thomas Hale, Laurence Wiche, Ralph Pole, Robert Mercer, Robert Wright, corviser, Thomas Henrison, Stephen Baxter, Roger Barbor, Richard Lym', Alexander Stiward and R[] Rogerson. Thomas Torbok, late of Chester, dyer (20d) forestalled the market, buying divers sorts of grain coming to the market of the City to be sold and continuing thus daily to forestall. Reginald Crue, late of Chester, gentleman (40d) is engaged in and exercises, as much through his wife as through several servants, the art of the pinners, and is engaged in buying and selling goods wholesale and retail within the City and is not admitted to the franchise. John Ormonde, carter, and Henry Scownes, carter, dug up the highway against le Honyflowe within the liberties of the City and made so great an open pit there that no one could pass by that way by day or night except in peril of his life. Peter Richardson, weaver (12d) and James Whatton, husbandman (12d), obstructed the highway near the lane outside le Barrez leading to another lane called Chester Lane with filth and other refuse so closely that no one on foot or on horse could pass through in winter time. John Gorstelowe (6s: 8d, crossed out), Richard Fynchet (40d), William Smyth (12d) and John Wrenoo (12d) forestalled and continually forestall the market by buying divers grains before they came to the market, by receiving the said grains in their houses and selling it outside the market to foreigners and all other persons. Roger Ledsham, late of Chester, sherman, servant of the Abbot of Chester, and William Eton, late of the same, husbandman and 'le hayward' of the said Abbot, continually annually impound within the Abbey the cattle and animals of the citizens for 'le Cornestathe' and other offences and causes arising within the liberties of the said City, and unjustly detain them in that pound until they have extortionately levied 1d. from every man as often as it befell that his cattle were impounded.
