Administrative History | Lonsdale & Adshead was a brewing firm situated at the Macclesfield Brewery, Park Green, Macclesfield. William Paxton or Caxton began brewing there in 1790. In the early 19th century the firm passed to his son-in-law, Thomas Airey. Airey later retired in 1840, after letting the brewery to William Piers Leigh. Leigh sold the contents of the Brewery in 1842, and Thomas Airey came out of retirement to enter into a partnership with Robert Lonsdale, a cashier manager at the Sutton brewery Macclesfield, to run the Macclesfield brewery once again. Thomas Airey died in 1847. In 1870 Robert Lonsdale joined Samuel Adshead. Robert Lonsdale died in 1871. The brewery continued to trade as Lonsdale and Adshead, and owned 2 off-licences and two licensed housed by 1891. Lonsdale and Adshead Limited was registered as a limited company on the 14 February 1899 to acquire the business from Samuel Adshead. In 1919 the company acquired Stancliffe Breweries Ltd, Sutton Brewery, Macclesfield, with 40 licensed houses. In 1928 the company acquired North Cheshire Breweries Limited.
In July 1950, Ind Coope & Allsop Ltd, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, acquired the share capital of Lonsdale & Adshead Limited. Macclesfield brewery ceased brewing in the August of the same year. Londale & Adshead remained a subsidiary company of Ind Coope & Allsop Ltd, and the site was used as a distrbution centre. The company was liquidated on 14 January 1952. The building was sold to Whitbread & Co Limited, London shortly afterwards. |
