Administrative History | Thomas S Bromley established the North Cheshire Brewery Company on Charles Street, Macclesfield, in 1860. In 1867 the Macclesfield Brewery and Wine Company Limited was registered as a limited company to buy the North Cheshire Brewery and the business of J H Firth, a Macclesfield wine and spirit merchant.
The firm became the Macclesfield Brewery Company Limited, when the wine and spirits business was dropped the following year. At this time the company was advertised as a wholesale retailer of mild & bitter ale and porter.
The company went into liquidation in July 1873, and the North Cheshire Brewery Company Limited was registered to acquire the former business. In 1891 they acquired four licensed houses from the Grapes brewery, Macclesfield, and three from the Royal Oak brewery, Macclesfield.
The North Cheshire & Manchester Brewery Company Limited was registered in October 1897 as a limited liability company to purchase the North Cheshire Brewery. The name was changed back in 1898 to the North Cheshire Brewery Company Limited, after legal action was taken by the Manchester Brewery Company Limited who objected to the use the name.
In 1928 Lonsdale & Adshead Limited acquired the company Lonsdale & Adshead took over the management and sold the brewery, but kept the company as a subsidiary.
In 1950 it came under the management of Ind Coope & Allsop Limited, who had acquired Lonsdale & Adshead Limited in the same year.
The company went into liquidation in 1960 and was final wound up on 21 May 1961. |
