| Administrative History | The New Cheshire Salt Works were established in 1891. At the start of the First World War the works were taken over by the Ministry of Munitions, between 1914-1918, and salt manufacture resumed, again in 1922.
The Stubbs family originally produced salt in Winsford, Cheshire, and the premises of the New Cheshire Salt Works were acquired by Alfred Stubbs and his son Albert Stubbs in 1923. Further generations of the Stubbs family operated the site, namely Leslie Stubbs, second son of Alfred Stubbs, and John and Gilmour Stubbs, sons of Albert Stubbs.
Upon purchase by Alfred Stubbs, the site was expanded and the company pioneered the use of road transport for salt distribution, using Foden steam wagons. In 1936 the company built its first vacuum plant. A major modernisation scheme was carried out in the 1970s. In the early 1980s, the New Cheshire Salt Works were the only UK supplier of high purity grade pharmaceutical salt.
The company suppied the retail trade, food, pharmaceutical, medical and water treatment industries and its products included the "Selva" brand.
The Stubbs family operated the works until 2006 when the company was bought by British Salt Ltd of Middlewich. The works closed June 2006.
The Stubbs family owned two further companies involved in the salt trade, Wincham Estate Limited, and Selwin (Northwich) Limited.
