DescriptionLetters patent for elevation of chantry of six chaplains at Arundel Castle to college status under the order of St Benedict. Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury and Sussex (d. 1094) granted land to Seez Abbey, which he had founded or restored, and a monastery was established in Arundel in 1102 for a priest and four monks as an alien priory with an annual income of over £54. In 1177 it was moved to the church of St Nicholas. The monks were withdrawn by 1379 and St Nicholas' became a secular college in 1380 by this deed, in the time of Richard, Earl of Arundel.
