DescriptionLetters patent for foundation of Holy Trinity College, Arundel, Sussex. John Assaven', bishop's delegate to Pope Boniface IX, (d. 1404), authorizes foundation of Maison Dieu hospital, Arundel by Richard Fitzalan, 9th Earl of Arundel and Surrey. Given at Church of the Holy Sepulchre, London. With declarations and sign manuals of notaries: Simon Kempston, clerk, Lincoln Diocese and William Gardiner, clerk, Chichester diocese.With vessica seal, pendant. Statutes for administration and facilities given. [Royal licence was granted in 1395 to alienate land for the hospital, as intended by the 9th Earl's father (d. 1376). The rule was probably that of the Augustinian order. The hospital had 1 master and 12 chaplains and admitted up to 20 male poor. It was dissolved in 1546].
